The conversation, step by step

How to Talk to Your Partner About the Mental Load

Most attempts at this conversation fail for the same reason: the load is invisible, so it sounds like a complaint about chores. It isn't. It's about who carries the planning, the remembering and the worrying — and that's harder to point at. Here's a way through it that doesn't end in a fight.

Written by Davon and Jasmin — about the authors.

1. Pick a moment that isn't the moment

The worst time to raise this is mid-resentment, at 9pm, when the dishwasher is still full. Ask for twenty minutes on a quiet evening. Naming it as a conversation you want to have — not an argument you're starting — changes how it lands.

2. Describe the thinking, not the chores

Chores are visible and get counted. The mental load is the remembering: whose shoes are too small, when the form is due, what everyone will eat on Thursday. Say that out loud. "I'm not tired from doing the tasks, I'm tired from being the one who has to notice them."

3. Write the invisible list down

Put every recurring thing you track on paper — appointments, birthdays, refills, school emails, gifts, groceries, the emotional temperature of each child. Seeing thirty items in your handwriting does more than any explanation. This is exactly what the worksheets in our books are for.

4. Hand over whole categories, not tasks

"Can you help with dinner?" keeps you as the manager. "Dinner Monday through Wednesday is yours — planning, shopping, cooking" moves the thinking too. Ownership is the point; a helper still needs a boss.

5. Expect it to be imperfect, and let it be

If you correct every detail, the load quietly comes back to you. Different is not wrong. Agree to check in after two weeks and adjust then, rather than course-correcting daily.

If you want the words ready

The Mother's Invisible Load puts language to the weight you're carrying and includes printable worksheets for the list, the conversation and the hand-off. It's part of the complete collection — all three ebooks for $27.98 instead of $41.97, so you save $13.99, downloaded instantly.
